History of the ATP Shanghai Masters Tournament
Tennis has been held in Shanghai on and off since 1996. That first tournament was known as the Shanghai Open and, since then, there have been a number of events held in China’s largest city.
The Shanghai Masters, as an ATP 1000 event and part of the Asian Swing, was first held in 2009, with global tennis authorities and those in China seeing the chance for great growth in the region.
Novak Djokovic holds the record for the most finals wins with four, while Andy Murray is another player who has had a good pedigree in the tournament, winning three. Interestingly, Rafael Nadal never won in Shanghai, falling in the final on two occasions - one of those was to two-time winner Roger Federer, which is no great shame.
Major players participating in the ATP Shanghai Masters
The top players on the ATP Tour, including the likes of Félix Auger-Aliassime, will be in China chasing final ranking points. Here are our picks for the most important names towards the end of the tournament.
Alexander Zverev
Alexander Zverev is not only Germany’s number one in men’s singles tennis, but will end 2026 as ATP number 1. After claiming his first Grand Slam wins in both the French Open and US Open, 2026 has been Zverev’s best-ever year on the Tour. He may mathematically be number 1, but he will want to keep up the good work and win here.
Daniil Medvedev
Daniil Medvedev will provide stiff competition for Zverev and will be considered one of the favourites for the tournament. Following the withdrawal of 2026 Wimbledon winner Jannik Sinner, the Russian eyed a chance to go far in the competition. Now 30, the time is running out for Medvedev to add to his one win here in 2019.
Our Shanghai Masters prediction: Zverev to win the title to end 2026 in red-hot form.
